The State Labour Inspectorate (VDI) has initiated a probe into a serious accident that occurred on Friday, July 10, in Riga. According to LTV's "Day News", a worker from the company "Latvijas dzelzceļš" (LDz) fell into the Daugava River while repairing the Railway Bridge and disappeared. The employee is still missing; rescue divers searched for him but suspended operations in the afternoon without finding him.
There were witnesses to the incident. Baiba Šilberga, head of VDI's Riga regional office, told LTV that the worker likely fell from a platform where he was performing duties. She suggested that the accident might have been caused by the lack of a safety harness.
So far this year, 14 people have died in workplaces in Latvia, a concerning figure indicating a rise in occupational safety issues. LDz issued a brief statement confirming the accident and said that details are being clarified, so no further comments are available at this time.
