President Rinkēvičs congratulates students and teachers on Knowledge Day

Latvian President Edgars Rinkēvičs marked Knowledge Day on September 1, 2026, with a congratulatory message addressed to students, teachers and parents, noting that the day remains special to him personally even though this year he only visits schools as a guest.

In his address, the President spoke to different groups of students — those eagerly awaiting the new school year, those who feel anxious about it, and those who would rather have stayed on summer break. He reminded them that school teaches more than what is written in the curriculum: it also teaches how to make friends, how to argue constructively while respecting others' opinions, and how to get through subjects that hold little interest.

A call to seek help

Rinkēvičs emphasized that the new school year will bring both satisfaction and moments that feel like dead ends. In such situations, he urged everyone — students, teachers and parents alike — not to hesitate to ask for help. He noted that learning to seek and find support is an important skill for everyone involved in the education system.

Addressing parents, educators and others working in education, the President reminded them that all discussions about schools should ultimately serve children's interests, helping them move through life more safely and successfully. He called for listening, dialogue and joint efforts to find solutions.

Special greeting for first-graders

Rinkēvičs offered a separate greeting to first-graders, comparing their first day of school to entering a new world full of knowledge, alongside other children taking their own first uncertain steps. He concluded by wishing all students, teachers and parents success in the new school year.
