Valve still unsure when a Steam Deck 2 might arrive

Having finished rolling out its 2026 hardware lineup — the Steam Controller, Steam Machine and Steam Frame — Valve says it still hasn't determined how or when a next-generation Steam Deck could launch, as it keeps waiting for the right chip.

Valve designer Pierre-Loup Griffais told IGN that the company is still working out "how and when" it could deliver a successor to the Steam Deck handheld. While Valve has long confirmed that a Steam Deck 2 will eventually happen, it insists the device won't launch until the right processor becomes available.

The original Steam Deck succeeded because of its balance of price, performance and battery life, and Griffais has repeatedly said Valve refuses to sacrifice power efficiency for the sequel. He has said he wants to see a genuine performance "leap" rather than an incremental upgrade.

Earlier this year, Griffais told IGN the team was "hard at work" on the next Steam Deck, without giving a timeline. That statement came as an ongoing RAM shortage had already forced Valve to delay and re-price both the Steam Machine and the Steam Frame headset.

Asked whether the current hardware shortage is affecting plans to move a Steam Deck 2 into development, Griffais simply said "Not really." That answer could suggest progress is continuing regardless of supply issues, or it could mean Valve is waiting for the chip shortage to ease before again negotiating with suppliers — a process that pushed the Steam Frame's price to $1,059 despite Valve's original hope of a more affordable headset.

The key unresolved question is whether Valve has already settled on the specific chip that will power the Steam Deck 2, since the company plans to design the hardware around that chip's availability. Intel's newer Panther Lake chip has been mentioned as one possible candidate, though it remains expensive and hasn't yet proven to be a decisive breakthrough.
