JD Vance says he will discuss 2028 presidential run after midterm elections
US Vice-President JD Vance announced he will discuss a potential 2028 presidential campaign with his wife after the 2026 midterms. He believes President Trump will be supportive of his decision.

US Vice-President JD Vance said he will discuss a potential 2028 presidential run with his wife Usha after the 2026 midterm elections, revealing his ongoing decision-making process in an interview with CBS Sunday Morning. Vance, who recently published his memoir "Communion: Finding My Way Back to Faith" about his conversion to Catholicism, noted that he tries not to make decisions until absolutely necessary. "People sort of assume that I’m sitting around, figuring out whether I’m gonna run for president… the way that I make decisions is that I try not to make them until I absolutely must," Vance stated.
Vance expressed confidence that President Trump would be supportive of his eventual decision. "I have no doubt that the president of the United States is going to be very supportive of anything that I ultimately decide to do," he said. He added that he never initiates discussions about his future political plans with Trump, but the president frequently brings it up both publicly and privately. "The president’s a political animal. He loves this stuff. He’s very fascinated by it," Vance remarked.
When asked whether Trump has explicitly asked him to seek the Republican nomination, Vance said the president is neither positive nor negative, but rather speaks about what will happen and how to ensure success. The Washington Post previously reported, citing an unnamed source close to Vance, that he may have delayed his decision on a 2028 run due to the upcoming birth of his fourth child in July. Vance is considered a top contender for the GOP nomination, with potential rivals including Secretary of State Marco Rubio, a former presidential candidate, and Donald Trump Jr., the president's eldest son, who has expressed interest in running for higher office.
