Latvian goaltender Elvis Merzlikins will not be starting the new National Hockey League (NHL) season in the near future. Columbus Blue Jackets general manager Don Waddell confirmed this development.

According to Waddell, Merzlikins complained of shoulder discomfort during summer training sessions. Because of these issues, the club's management decided in August that the goaltender required surgery.

Recovery timeline still unclear

The Columbus Blue Jackets have not yet provided specific details on how long Merzlikins' recovery from shoulder surgery will take. The club has promised to share more information on the expected recovery period at a later date, once there is a clearer picture of his condition following the procedure.

Merzlikins' absence means the Columbus Blue Jackets will have to begin the new season without one of their key goaltenders.
