Five Children Fall from Windows This Summer; Medics Urge Safety
The Emergency Medical Service (EMS) has responded to five cases this summer where children fell out of windows. None were fatal, but the service warns of lasting consequences.

This summer, Latvian emergency medics have attended five incidents involving children falling from windows, according to the State Emergency Medical Service (NMPD). In one case, a child fell from the fifth floor. While no fatalities occurred, the service emphasizes that such falls often leave permanent physical and emotional scars, including severe psychological trauma.
NMPD stresses that a fall from as little as one meter can cause a skull fracture, and even a fall from the first floor can be tragic. Therefore, the service reminds parents and caregivers of key safety measures.
First, windowsills are not play areas – children should never be placed on them or taught to climb onto them. Second, furniture should not be positioned near windows to prevent children from climbing up and opening them. Third, when airing out a room, children must not be left unattended. NMPD also recommends considering window safety devices and discussing potential risks with children.
The service notes that children explore the world with curiosity and may not understand danger. A few seconds of inattention can lead to an accident. Ultimately, the safety of a child is the responsibility of the adult.
