Only One in Three Latvian Youth Works in Summer, Survey Shows
The majority of Latvian youth do not work in summer, while those who do often save for large purchases.

According to a survey commissioned by SEB bank, approximately one in three young people aged 7 to 17 works or plans to work during the summer. Of these, 11% have been working officially for several years, 13% will gain their first work experience this summer, and 15% earn money through small jobs or helping relatives. However, more than half (53%) remain outside the labor market.
The survey reveals three main reasons for not working. In 16% of cases, it is due to difficulties finding a job in their area, particularly in small towns and rural regions. Another factor is age restrictions, as official work is harder for younger students to find, and some parents believe their children are too young. Third, some young people prefer to relax and spend free time with friends or traveling.
Working youth tend to manage money more purposefully. Over half (55% of workers) save for larger purchases, while 6% save for long-term goals such as studies. However, overall, young people spend more than they save, and some do not save at all.
The survey was conducted in May by Norstat, with 1,005 parents of children aged 7 to 17 participating.
