Accumulating Vacation Days: Employee and Employer Rights in Latvia
Employees who postpone their vacation for various reasons can accumulate unused days for years. We explain the rights and whether accumulated vacation can be lost.

The summer vacation season is in full swing, but some employees postpone their time off for various reasons. As a result, unused vacation days can accumulate over several years. This raises questions: how long can an employee accumulate vacation days? Is compensation due for unused days? And can accumulated vacation be lost?
Labor legislation grants employees the right to annual leave, but the employer regulates the use of it. If vacation is not taken within a certain period, it can accumulate. However, there are limits on how long it can be carried over. Typically, an employee can accumulate vacation only for a specified period, after which the right to unused days may be lost unless an agreement with the employer is reached.
Compensation for unused vacation is usually only paid upon termination of employment. The employer is obliged to inform the employee about the possibilities of using vacation and the consequences of not doing so. Therefore, it is important for both parties to understand their rights and obligations to avoid disputes.
