Summer Picnic May Reveal Hidden Health Issue: Reflux

Symptoms such as heartburn, abdominal pain, bloating or diarrhea after summer celebrations are not always the result of overeating. Experts note that these can be the first signs of reflux, a condition often discovered after such episodes.

The summer season brings picnics and festive meals, but for many people these celebrations end with unpleasant digestive complaints. A burning sensation behind the breastbone, stomach pain, bloating or diarrhea are commonly attributed to overeating. However, experts warn that these symptoms may have another explanation.

Gastroenterologist Olesja Basina points out that it is often after such episodes that reflux, also known as acid regurgitation, is diagnosed for the first time. This means a summer feast may be the moment when the body signals an underlying problem. Because reflux symptoms resemble those of overeating, they are easy to overlook or dismiss as a one-time issue. If they occur repeatedly, they may point to a more serious digestive disorder.

Nutritionist Guna Bīlande, in turn, reminds that summer eating habits frequently become a serious challenge for the digestive system. During holidays, meal patterns tend to differ from everyday routines, and the body may struggle to cope. Such habits can lead not only to temporary discomfort but also reveal previously unnoticed health conditions, including reflux. Specialists therefore encourage paying attention to the body's signals and not ignoring persistent digestive problems.
