White Supremacists March in Washington on 250th US Independence Anniversary
Hundreds of members of the far-right group Patriot Front marched through Washington, D.C. on July 4, 2026, during celebrations of the 250th anniversary of U.S. independence. The group chanted slogans and carried Confederate flags.

On Saturday, July 4, hundreds of members of the far-right group Patriot Front, wearing masks, marched through the streets of Washington, D.C. during the celebration of the 250th anniversary of U.S. independence.
According to media and eyewitness reports, about 700 participants gathered near Union Station and marched through Capitol Hill and the Eastern Market neighborhood. The participants wore matching uniforms: khaki pants and caps with the organization's logo, blue shirts, sunglasses, and white masks covering their faces.
The white supremacists marched to drum beats, chanting slogans such as "Life, liberty, victory!" and "Take America back!" They carried Confederate flags, flags of their group, and upside-down U.S. flags. According to the U.S. Flag Code, an inverted flag is a traditional signal of "extreme danger to life or property."
Police and Expert Comments
A spokesperson for the Metropolitan Police Department told The Hill that "the police recognize the right of citizens to peacefully express their views and remain committed to maintaining public safety and order for residents and visitors of the District of Columbia."
Luke Baumgartner, a research fellow at the Program on Extremism at George Washington University, noted that while the group's imagery attempts to appeal to patriotism through red, white, and blue colors, its logo uses iconography similar to the "fasces" symbol of Benito Mussolini's National Fascist Party in Italy in the 1920s–1940s. "At its core, it is truly a white supremacist organization that effectively agitates through such public actions, whether surprise marches, leafleting, protests, or hanging banners over highways. They are trying to spread the idea that America is a country created exclusively by whites and for whites," Baumgartner said.
Patriot Front is a U.S. far-right neo-fascist organization that promotes white supremacy. It emerged in late August 2017, splitting from the neo-Nazi group Vanguard America after the controversial Unite the Right rally in Charlottesville, Virginia, which was accompanied by violence and resulted in numerous casualties.
