Vaughan: England need punishment that 'sends a shiver' through whole team
England cricketer Brydon Carse has been dropped from the second Test against Pakistan after a brief arrest in Derby, with former captain Michael Vaughan calling for a harsh disciplinary precedent.
England's cricket team faces another off-field controversy after fast bowler Brydon Carse was briefly arrested during a night out with Durham team-mates in Derby over the weekend. The Cricket Regulator is now investigating the incident, and Carse has been withdrawn from England's squad for the second Test against Pakistan at Lord's, with Sonny Baker called up as his replacement.
Derbyshire Police confirmed a man in his 30s was arrested on Saturday night on suspicion of being drunk and disorderly in Derby city centre, but was de-arrested shortly afterwards after agreeing to leave the area.
Former England captain Michael Vaughan told BBC Radio 5 Live that a punishment is needed that would "send a shiver down the whole team and right through the programme," so players understand the consequences of damaging the team's reputation. He added he would nonetheless feel for Carse if he became the one to take the blame for a string of incidents over the past nine months.
Carse becomes the eighth centrally contracted England player in the past year to be involved in or present at a late-night incident — more than a quarter of the 30 players on England deals. Other cases include an assault on white-ball captain Harry Brook in Wellington, footage of Ben Duckett appearing drunk during the Ashes tour, and a curfew breach involving Ben Stokes and Gus Atkinson in London.
Former spinner Phil Tufnell agreed that only a severe punishment, such as being dropped for several matches, would stop the pattern of behaviour.
England captain Joe Root, only one match into his second spell in charge, is due to address the media on Tuesday about the fallout. He had earlier urged his players to be "good role models and good human beings."
