Latvian Security Service: Fire at charity 'Tavi draugi' warehouse possibly set in Russia's interests

The Latvian State Security Service (VDD) is assisting the State Police in investigating a fire that broke out on the night of July 19 at the central building and warehouse of the charity "Tavi draugi" on Lapeņu Street in Riga. The VDD assesses that, given Russia's hostile activities in Latvia and other NATO and EU countries in recent years, the possibility that the fire was set in Russia's interests cannot be ruled out. Institutions supporting Ukraine have long been priority targets for Russian special services in Europe.

According to Ulvis Noviks, the head of the organization, surveillance footage shows two masked individuals climbing over the fence. They broke a window and threw a burning object inside. The attack lasted only a few minutes; although the alarm was triggered and security arrived quickly, the perpetrators had already fled. No staff or visitors were present at the time.

Noviks stated that the organization had not received direct threats, but hostile comments had been observed on social media. Damages are yet to be precisely determined but are estimated near 100,000 euros. Donated electronics, clothing, food, and other support for Ukrainian soldiers were destroyed, and the organization's equipment was damaged. The fire affected 250 square meters, but the entire leased building of 1000 square meters suffered damage.

Despite the incident, the organization continues its work, though its operations are impacted. Temporary solutions are being sought to accept and distribute donations to Ukraine and Latvian residents. The organization calls for financial support to cover the fire's consequences, as well as material donations and volunteer help. "Tavi draugi" has been providing humanitarian aid to Ukraine for a long time and has delivered assistance worth over 12 million euros since the start of the war.
