Vecpiebalga conference highlights women who shaped Piebalga's cultural history
A conference held at Vecpiebalga manor explored the lives and legacy of women connected to the Piebalga region's cultural history. The event focused on several lesser-known women whose contributions have often been overshadowed by famous Piebalga men such as Kārlis Skalbe or the Kaudzīte brothers.
When people speak of Piebalga as a cradle of Latvian culture, names like Kārlis Skalbe, Reinis and Matīss Kaudzīte, Antons Austriņš, or Emīls Dārziņš usually come to mind. Far less is heard, however, about the women who also left their mark on the region's cultural life.
In late July, Vecpiebalga manor hosted a conference titled "Women in the Cultural Space of Piebalga: Personalities and Legacy," which presented the life stories and work of notable women from the Vidzeme highlands. Among those discussed were Lizete Skalbe, Mudīte Austriņa, Andžela Gailīte, Dzidra Kuzmane, and two women named Marianna — Bergmane and Zīle-Graubiņa.
Bringing overlooked contributions to light
The conference aimed to draw attention to women whose cultural contributions have historically received less recognition than those of their famous husbands, brothers, or contemporaries. The event gave a wider audience the chance to learn about these women's lives and the legacy they left within Piebalga's cultural heritage and Latvia's broader cultural history.
