A new exhibition called "Always Sun" opened this week at the Riga Contemporary Art Space in the heart of Riga's Old Town. The show was created by a Greek contemporary art group and centers on the ancient concept of the polis — a community of citizens.
The idea of the polis today
At the opening, Greek art curator Marina Flokide explained that historically the polis was defined less by territory and more by the people who formed it. According to the curator, upon entering the exhibition space — likened to an ancient "agora," a gathering place — visitors themselves become citizens of that community, regardless of where they originally come from.
Flokide noted that visitors who do not wish to take part, or who feel the space demands too much of them, have the option to sit down on steps placed within the exhibition. In doing so, they shift from being participants to being observers.
The curator compared this dynamic to everyday modern experience, in which people use the internet to watch events unfolding in the real world without being directly involved in them.
The exhibition in Old Riga
"Always Sun" can be viewed at the Riga Contemporary Art Space, located in the heart of Riga's Old Town. The exhibition was created by a contemporary art group from Greece and is built around ideas of community, belonging, and the shifting role between viewer and participant in the experience of art.
