Riga Municipal Police detained two men who were caught on surveillance cameras burgling a luxury "Bentley" car in Riga's Old Town. The incident took place last Wednesday, 21 October, shortly before 10 p.m. Both detainees have been handed over to the State Police, which will continue the procedural steps.

How the theft unfolded

Operators at the municipal police video surveillance centre, watching cameras installed in the old town, noticed two men. One kept watch on the surroundings while the other searched the interior of the car. Suspicion grew when the man inside left the vehicle through a rear door and the car's alarm went off.

The pair then checked other vehicles as well. They found an unlocked "Opel" and got into it.

The detention

The nearest municipal police patrol was sent to the scene immediately. It detained one of the men, but the other ran off. An additional patrol joined the search. Surveillance centre staff passed on directions about the fleeing man's location and direction of movement, and shortly afterwards he was caught and detained too.

Police handed both detained individuals to the State Police for further procedural action. The source does not say what exactly was taken from the car or what charges may follow.
