Latvia's electoral system: why do politicians call for change every year?

Every year before Saeima elections, the same debate resurfaces in Latvia's political space — whether the country's electoral system needs to be changed. Such calls most often come from opposition politicians or newer political forces, who tend to view the current arrangement as disadvantageous or unfair to them.

However, as observers point out, no country in the world has an electoral system that fully satisfies both voters and all political forces at once. Every system carries both advantages and disadvantages, and systems also differ in how they calculate the number of seats won and in how much influence an individual voter can have over the final result.

Each country has its own system

It is important to understand that a solution that works well in one country will not necessarily suit another. The reason is simple: each country's society is unique, shaped by its own historical experience, political culture and ethnic composition. This means that borrowing another country's electoral model offers no guarantee it would function equally well or produce the desired outcome in Latvia.

The question of possible changes to Latvia's electoral system has therefore remained on the agenda for several years, yet no concrete, widely supported reform has been implemented so far. The debate over whether and how to change the system is likely to continue in future election cycles as well, since the arrival of each new political force in the Saeima tends to bring the topic back into focus.
