Why a win over Denmark matters for Wales' Nations League status
Wales' upcoming match against Denmark could decide whether the team avoids relegation or play-offs in the Nations League, after format changes reduce the number of teams dropping from League A.

Wales' upcoming fixture against Denmark carries significant weight for the team's standing in the UEFA Nations League heading into the next cycle.
The encouraging news for Wales is that the team could remain in League A even by finishing bottom of their group. This is due to a format change taking effect for the 2028-29 Nations League edition, under which fewer teams will be relegated from League A than before.
What's changing
Previously, the bottom-placed side in each of the four League A groups was automatically relegated, while the four third-placed teams entered relegation/promotion play-offs against League B's four runners-up. Under the new system, only the two worst-performing bottom-placed teams will be relegated, with the remaining two going into two-legged play-offs in March 2027.
Additionally, the two best-performing third-placed teams will have their League A status guaranteed, while the other two will face the play-offs. Rankings are determined by points, goal difference, and standard tie-breaking criteria.
Wales currently sit as the best-ranked among the fourth-placed teams across the groups, meaning a victory over Denmark would give them real hope of avoiding the play-offs entirely. A win would also keep alive Wales' chances of finishing second in their group, which would open the door to next spring's Nations League knockout rounds, including two-legged quarter-finals scheduled for March.
