Where is Wales' next male golf star coming from?

Wales has no male golfer at this year's Open Championship, and the highest-ranked player is 953rd in the world. The governing body Wales Golf is focusing on youth development to reverse the trend.

The Open Championship returns to Royal Birkdale this week, a venue that has seen several Welsh near-misses in the past. However, no Welshman will tee off on Thursday, continuing a barren run. Oliver Farr was the last to qualify, in 2023, while Rhys Enoch was the most recent to make the cut, in 2018.

Wales' highest-ranked male golfer is Jack Davidson, at 953rd in the world. Performance director Gareth Jenkins, who joined Wales Golf in 2024 after a decade with England Golf, believes the situation can improve. Over the past two years, Wales Golf has established regional development programmes focusing on younger players.

"We are seeing the fruits of that development coming through," Jenkins said, pointing to Darcey Harry's win on the Ladies European Tour in 2024 as an example. "Small can be beautiful if we're all aligned," he added, noting that the under-16 group is among the best he has seen.

Jenkins also aims to involve former professionals like Bradley Dredge, who has offered his help free of charge. With Stuart Manley joining the performance team in October, they plan to bring in past and current pros to mentor young talents.

Promising players include James Ashfield, who became Wales' first Walker Cup player in six years in 2023, and amateur Tomi Bowen. Jenkins expects some players to turn professional soon, with a larger cohort emerging in about five years.
