Wales win fourth Commonwealth Games swimming medal

Wales' swimming team continued their success at the Commonwealth Games by winning a fourth medal. Team members highlighted their close bond and long journey together.

Relay triumph

Melbourne-Smith, who was disqualified in the 4x100m relay on the opening day, anchored Wales home on the final leg, avoiding being caught by Scotland's Duncan Scott. "My adrenaline was rushing but it was just about keeping it for the last 50 metres. Holding my nerve, and these boys did all the hard work. It's probably the best moment of my swimming career so far," said Melbourne-Smith.

Bird was on the podium after earlier competing in the heats of the mixed freestyle relay. Harry Milne, Jack Knight, Lewis Fraser, and Bird had swum in the heats of the 4x200m freestyle relay on Sunday morning. Fraser later finished seventh in the 100m butterfly final.

Individual highlights

Theodora Taylor continued her impressive form by qualifying for the women's 100m freestyle final. The 17-year-old, who won a relay bronze on Saturday, posted the fourth-fastest time to make Monday night's final. Sophie Davies failed to qualify despite a season's best, while Kyle Booth exited in the men's 50m breaststroke semi-final. Meghan Willis finished sixth in the women's S9 100m backstroke final, won by England's Alice Tai.

Team spirit

Richards emphasized the team's unity: "We've talked a lot about how tight-knit we are; a lot of us have come through the ranks since we were very young and grown as a team. To be able to do it together has been incredible. Seeing that Welsh flag go up on the podium is one of the highlights of my career. Hopefully we can do it a few more times." Fraser, who competed in both relay and individual events, added: "When they asked me to step up for the team I didn't even hesitate. I know that's an individual event for me, but I always swim with the team on my back."
