Wales cyclists shine on opening night of Commonwealth Games
Wales' track cycling team won three medals – gold, silver and bronze – on the opening night of the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.

Wales made a spectacular start to their Commonwealth Games track cycling campaign at the Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome in Glasgow, securing medals in all three events they contested on the first evening.
Golden girls in team sprint
The women's team sprint trio of Emma Finucane, Lowri Thomas and Rhian Edmunds stormed to gold. They set a new Commonwealth Games record in the morning qualifying session and defeated the English team in the final. Finucane, who is scheduled to compete in three more events this week, described the victory as "insane" and praised the support from the crowd.
Silver for tandem pair
James Ball, a visually impaired athlete, and his pilot Matt Rotherham claimed silver in the men's B tandem 1,000m time trial, matching their result from Birmingham 2022. Gold went to Scotland's Neil Fachie, who now has six Commonwealth Games golds. Ball and Rotherham will have a chance to defend their tandem sprint title on Saturday.
Bronze after comeback
The women's team pursuit squad, including Ciara Oliva who came out of retirement after the 2018 Games, won bronze by beating England. Oliva, 36, rode with Megan Barker, Jessica Roberts and Anna Morris. Her husband Lewis Oliva, who also returned to racing, missed a chance to race for bronze in the men's team sprint after teammate Ioan Hepburn withdrew due to illness. Trinidad and Tobago were awarded the bronze instead.
The men's team pursuit finished fourth after losing the bronze medal race to New Zealand.
Despite the men's disappointments, Wales' track cyclists can be proud of their opening night, with more medal opportunities in the remaining three days.
