Welshman Donald earns first England white-ball call-up

England have called up two uncapped players, Derbyshire's Aneurin Donald and Sussex seamer Henry Crocombe, for their white-ball squads against Sri Lanka.

Donald, 29, joins the 16-player squad for the three-match T20 series. He captained Derbyshire Falcons to 489 runs in 12 Vitality Blast matches this season and struck a competition-high 37 sixes. He also helped Trent Rockets reach the final of the Hundred, where they lost to Manchester Super Giants.

Crocombe, 24, is named in the 16-man squad for the three one-day internationals. He has taken hat-tricks in his last two County Championship matches and recorded three five-wicket hauls this season.

England men's national selector Marcus North described the pair as promising players who earned their places through strong domestic performances, adding that Crocombe had been watched closely throughout the summer.

All-rounder Jacob Bethell remains sidelined after undergoing successful knee surgery this week, with a comeback targeted for the November white-ball series against Australia. He was injured during the ODI series against India in the summer and subsequently missed the Test series against Pakistan; he is also expected to miss an ODI tri-series in Pakistan in October.

Batter Phil Salt is out with a right quad injury, while Jamie Overton returns to both squads having missed the recent series against India through a thigh injury.

Durham seamer Brydon Carse has not been selected for either squad. The 31-year-old was dropped from the second Test against Pakistan after being briefly arrested following an incident outside a Derby nightclub on 22 August. The England and Wales Cricket Board said that although Carse was available, the squad omission would allow him time to address the issues behind the incident, stressing the decision does not prejudge any investigation. Derbyshire police continue to investigate an assault allegation linked to the incident.
