Venezuela Earthquake Death Toll Surpasses 1,400

At least 1,430 people have died in Venezuela after two major earthquakes, with over 3,200 injured and thousands of families displaced, according to official reports.

The death toll from the devastating earthquakes in Venezuela has risen to at least 1,430, according to the head of the National Assembly, Jorge Rodríguez, as reported by CNN. Rodríguez also stated that at least 3,238 people were injured and 3,142 families lost their homes. The country has experienced at least 430 aftershocks following the two main quakes that struck on Wednesday, June 24. The first earthquake had a magnitude of 7.2, followed by a second of 7.5 magnitude. Many buildings collapsed. Earlier reports on June 25 indicated 32 dead and 700 injured, but the number quickly rose to 164, then to 920 by the night, before reaching the current figure. The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) warned that the final death toll could exceed 10,000.
