US Vice President James David Vance said on Wednesday that the Republican Party lost the midterm elections because of the war with Iran. In the midterms, the congressional elections held halfway through a presidential term, Democrats regained control of both chambers of the US Congress. Vance's assessment matters because it feeds into the Republican debate over the party's future direction.

Vance made his remarks on the platform X. He wrote that the reason for the loss is the war, and noted that President Donald Trump had said so himself the previous evening. According to the source, Trump had acknowledged that the war with Iran was one of the reasons for the defeat, but argued that it was nonetheless justified.

A call for an honest conversation

Vance urged those who believe the war was worth it to say so openly, including when it comes to losing the Senate for the next six years. In his view, any honest discussion about how to proceed must begin with that acknowledgement.

The vice president conceded that some voters who backed Trump and Vance in 2024 voted for Democrats this year. He named the war against Iran and its effect on the US economy as the main reasons. Vance referred to polling by an agency he respects, which indicates that voters were also driven away by a desire to change America's relationship with Israel.

Impact on 2028

The Democrats' decisive win threatens Vance's possible chances of running in the 2028 presidential election. He has not confirmed that he is preparing a bid, but he is widely seen as a potential Republican nominee. Vance has long criticised US foreign interventions and is reported to have expressed skepticism about the war against Iran behind the scenes.
