New exhibition on Ventspils port history opens in castle tower after 25 years
A new exhibition has opened in the tower of Ventspils Castle on September 3, presenting the development of the port and city from the 13th to the 19th century. The nearly half-million-euro project also included conservation and restoration of the tower.
Starting September 3, visitors to the Ventspils Museum can explore a new exhibition housed in the castle tower. The display covers the historical development of the Ventspils port and city from the 13th through the 19th century. This marks the first time in 25 years that a comparable exhibition has been open to the public in the tower.
A modernized visitor experience
The project behind the new exhibition was a substantial undertaking, with costs reaching nearly half a million euros. Beyond preparing new content, the museum now offers visitors various digital tools and interactive games, allowing them to learn about the city's and port's history in a modern, engaging format.
Restoration work on the tower
Alongside the creation of the exhibition, conservation and restoration work was carried out on the tower of the Ventspils Livonian Order Castle, preparing the building to house the new displays while preserving its historical value.
European fund support
The project secured funding from the European Maritime, Fisheries and Aquaculture Fund (EMFAF), which helped cover part of the costs for both the exhibition and the restoration work.
