For several days, residents of Ventspils County have been witnessing an alarming sight: hundreds of dead fish floating down the Stende and Irbe rivers, accompanied by a sharp smell of rot. Locals are concerned that the content of nearby wastewater treatment facilities may have entered the water.

However, the State Environmental Service has dismissed this possibility. According to the agency, the mass fish death is connected to the effects of intense rainfall. The service has not provided further details but is urging people not to spread unverified claims.

The situation remains under observation as authorities assess the condition of the river ecosystem. While residents fear pollution, the environmental agency points to natural causes – sudden heavy rains can alter oxygen levels in the water and lead to fish kills.
