Werenski Staying in Columbus

Following weeks of trade rumors, Columbus Blue Jackets defenseman Zach Werenski confirmed Wednesday that he wants to continue his career with the team. The 28-year-old, who has spent his entire 10-season NHL career in Columbus, said the situation was blown out of proportion and decided to stay after discussions with his family.

Werenski is one of the league's premier defensemen. Over the past two seasons, he averaged more than 26 minutes of ice time, led the Blue Jackets in scoring with over 80 points each year, won the Norris Trophy as the NHL's top defenseman this season, and helped the U.S. national team win Olympic gold.

Despite individual success, the team has struggled. Columbus has missed the playoffs for six consecutive seasons and has only one playoff series victory since joining the NHL nearly 26 years ago.

Trade Plans and Final Decision

Earlier, Werenski had informed management about possible doubts regarding his future after his current contract expires in 2028. This prompted the Blue Jackets to explore trade options. At one point, Columbus reached a deal with the Dallas Stars, but Werenski used his no-trade clause to block the move.

General Manager Waddell explained that after the season, both sides agreed to consider beneficial options. When the Dallas deal emerged, Werenski consulted his family and chose to stay.

"After talking with my wife and family, we realized we want to be here. This city has been my home for ten years," Werenski said. "I want to win, and I want to do it in Columbus."

Werenski's current contract carries a $9.58 million cap hit and runs through the 2027-28 season. Both player and club emphasize their shared goal is to return the Blue Jackets to Stanley Cup contention.
