The main advice is to ensure enough surrounding space regardless of how the console is placed.
Today's gaming consoles are engineered to function equally well upright or lying flat, meaning the choice mostly comes down to available space and personal preference. Still, specialists point out that airflow is the most important factor, since consoles need room to release heat — a concern that matters even more now given how expensive these devices have become.
Manufacturers advise against squeezing a console into a tightly enclosed media cabinet, stacking other devices on top of it, or pushing it directly against a wall. Dust should also be cleared out regularly to prevent overheating. Both Sony and Microsoft additionally recommend placing consoles on a stable surface, given their weight and vulnerability to damage from falls.
Stability versus space savings
Standing a console vertically saves space and works well in tighter setups, but it also makes the unit easier to tip over — a real risk for households with energetic pets or young children. Laying it flat takes up more room but lowers the center of gravity, making it more stable and often a better fit beneath a television.
The old argument that disc-based consoles must lie flat to read discs properly no longer really applies, since modern hardware only reads discs when installing a game or verifying ownership. The one small edge horizontal placement retains is that it's easier to remember which way the disc label should face.
As for the PlayStation 5 specifically, there's no evidence that vertical placement increases overheating risk — what matters is the amount of clear space around the console. Sony recommends keeping it at least four inches from walls. If a PS5 starts running hot, owners should check for blocked vents and regularly remove the side panels to clear out dust buildup.
