Historians: commonly cited figures on WWI-era refugees from Latvia are inaccurate

LSM's history section points out that widely accepted data on the number and composition of refugees who left Latvia during World War I contain significant inaccuracies. This is a reminder that many periods of Latvian history remain poorly studied.

Latvian history still contains a number of areas, and even entire periods, that have been little or not at all researched. Historians note that it is surprising how significant inaccuracies can be found even in matters that are generally considered well established and clear.

One such example concerns events of the First World War — specifically, the flow of refugees who left the territory of present-day Latvia at the time. Figures long taken for granted regarding how many people abandoned their homes and what the composition of this refugee population was turn out to be less precise than commonly assumed.

Why it matters

The finding shows that even widely known and seemingly well-documented chapters of history can still hide unanswered questions. It points to the need for continued research into historical sources in order to build a more accurate picture of the fate of Latvia's population during the years of the First World War.
