Storm damage at "Olimpia" mall parking lot echoes an incident from 18 years ago

After the weekend storm, insulation material fell from the ceiling of the "Olimpia" shopping centre's parking area, and a video of the damage spread on social media. A commenter noted that a similar scene was captured at the same spot back in 2008.

A video circulating on social media shows damage caused by the recent powerful storm in the parking area of the "Olimpia" shopping centre. Between parked cars, the footage shows wet insulation material and other ceiling finishing fragments scattered on the floor, along with visible water.

The post drew a wide response in the comments, with some users reacting with irony and others expressing surprise at the extent of the damage shown.

A reference to 2008

One comment in particular drew attention: a user claimed that a very similar scene had been seen at the same location 18 years earlier, on 23 February 2008. They attached two photos taken with an older-generation phone, showing a parking area with gaps in the ceiling and hanging or fallen insulation material. If the photos were indeed taken at the same location, they suggest that a nearly identical scene has repeated itself almost two decades later.

Debate over the cause

The comments section saw discussion over whether the storm alone was to blame. Some users suggested the real cause might be substandard construction work rather than the weather event itself. The video's author confirmed that the building had recently undergone renovation, though the published images alone do not make it possible to determine exactly why the materials detached from the ceiling or whether it is connected to the recent construction work.

Assessment of the storm's broader damage across Latvia is ongoing. On Monday morning, power supply disruptions were reported in several municipalities, including Tīnūži, Ogresgals, Bauska municipality, Jumprava, the Roja area, Inčukalns, the Talsi area and elsewhere, though electricity had already been restored in some locations.
