Storm Leaves Latvian Residents Without Communication and Fuel

A storm that swept across Latvia over the weekend left residents in several towns without services they normally take for granted. In many areas mobile networks and internet access went down, and power outages forced fuel stations and shops to shut their doors.

The disruptions raised questions about how prepared mobile operators, fuel station networks and retailers actually were for such a crisis. The issue was the focus of a discussion on the LSM programme "Обсудим вечером" ("Let's Discuss It Tonight"), where the hosts examined why the country's infrastructure struggled to withstand the storm's impact and why services in some places remained unavailable for extended periods.

For residents of the affected towns, the weekend effectively meant temporary isolation: without a working connection, people could not communicate, make card payments, or refuel their vehicles. The programme's participants discussed whether such widescale outages could happen again and what steps providers should take to be better prepared for future extreme weather events.
