Storm overshadows gala concert: Dzintari audience recount dangerous moments
A gala concert at Dzintari Concert Hall on August 22, dedicated to the Baltic Awards 2026 laureates, sparked wide debate about audience safety after a storm with falling trees hit Jurmala during and after the event.
On August 22, the legendary Dzintari Concert Hall in Jurmala hosted the festive concert "GALA GALANTE. Viva La Musica!", dedicated to the laureates of the international Baltic Awards 2026. The event was attended by award recipients, honorary members of the selection committee, diplomats, and representatives of culture and business from Latvia and abroad. The hall was full, and the concert ended with a long standing ovation.
However, after the event a wide discussion erupted on social media over audience safety during the storm that struck at the same time. Several attendees described how the storm began right when the lights went out inside the hall, bringing strong wind, rain, and falling objects from the upper seating tiers. During the second part of the concert, a pine tree reportedly fell within the concert hall grounds.
Some attendees said the most dangerous moments came after the concert, as the crowd headed home. On Jomas Street, a tree fell across the road, narrowly missing passers-by. Another attendee recalled broken branches on the way to Dzintari train station and cancelled trains toward Riga.
Soprano Inese Galante, who also held a ticket to the concert, decided not to attend for safety reasons. Several people who contacted the Inese Galante Foundation afterward learned that organizers were not willing to consider cancelling the concert or refunding tickets, saying everything had been legally in order since the concert hall itself has a roof.
Reactions in the discussion varied: some argued adults should assess risks themselves and take responsibility for their own safety, while others took a harsher view, saying profit should never outweigh people's safety and lives. Commenters also pointed out that several other events planned for that stormy day — including the Carnikava lamprey festival, a concert in Marupe, and an event in Saulkrasti — were cancelled or postponed, while a Sudden Lights concert in Ligatne was moved to August 30.
The question of where attendees' personal responsibility ends and organizers' duty to ensure safety begins is likely to remain a key topic of debate following this concert.
