Stormy, rainy weather in Latvia expected to last all weekend
Rain fell across much of Latvia on the morning of Friday, 9 October, with gusts reaching 19 m/s on the Kurzeme west coast. Forecasters expect unsettled, wet weather to continue through the weekend and into next week.

Rain was falling across much of Latvia on Friday morning, 9 October, and the heaviest precipitation in the coming hours is expected in the central part of the country, according to meteorological data. Forecasters say unsettled weather with rain and gusty wind will persist throughout the weekend, while temperatures stay in line with the season.
Friday
Skies are mostly overcast, with haze in places. A light to moderately strong southerly and southwesterly wind is blowing. Gusts reach 14 metres per second in the west and centre of the country, and up to 19 metres per second on the western coast of Kurzeme. Air temperature is +10 to +14 degrees Celsius, relative humidity is 75–100%, and air quality is good.
In Riga it is raining intermittently, with a southerly wind at five metres per second. The temperature is +12 to +13 degrees, although at midnight it had reached +15.5.
On Thursday, maximum temperatures in the observation network of the Latvian Environment, Geology and Meteorology Centre ranged from +14.9 degrees in Kolka to +19.7 degrees in Liepāja. The highest temperature in Europe on 8 October was +35 degrees on the northern coast of Sicily, and the lowest overnight into Friday was -8 degrees in northern Finland and Sweden.
Weekend
The wind will ease on Saturday morning, but on the coast it will strengthen again in the afternoon, with southerly and southwesterly gusts up to 17 metres per second. Rain is expected on and off, with a maximum temperature of +9 to +15 degrees.
On Sunday, clouds will partly clear and short showers will fall in places; thunderstorms are possible in parts of Kurzeme. Night temperatures will drop to +5 to +10 degrees, rising to +11 to +15 during the day.
Next week
Short showers are expected in places during the working week, with more widespread precipitation on Wednesday. Fog may thicken at night in some areas, and temperatures could fall to zero degrees locally. Daytime highs will mostly be +9 to +14 degrees, possibly a degree warmer on Thursday and Friday.
