Tax authority finds no unregistered employment of foreign athletes
Latvia's State Revenue Service (VID) says it has not found cases of foreign athletes being employed without labor contracts, responding to claims made by the State Border Guard chief. VID noted that overseeing labor relations falls under the State Labor Inspectorate.
Latvia's State Revenue Service (VID) has responded to remarks by State Border Guard chief Guntis Pujāts, who said the Border Guard had identified cases of foreign athletes being employed without labor contracts. VID stated that, in carrying out its own duties and functions, it has not detected such cases.
VID also said it has not received any information from the Border Guard regarding violations by non-governmental organizations related to the employment of foreign athletes. The agency pointed out that oversight and control of labor relations fall under the State Labor Inspectorate, not VID.
What Pujāts said
Pujāts had earlier stated that one of the most common violations occurs when a foreign national formally has the right to work in Latvia, but not at a specific company or in a specific profession. He said such violations are most frequent in the construction sector. According to him, a number of foreign athletes are also employed without labor contracts, mainly in football and basketball, and occasionally in hockey.
