Latvia's State Revenue Service (VID), which oversees tax collection and also monitors the declarations filed by state officials, has begun checking the declarations of two leaders of the Latvian Academy of Sciences (LZA). The check concerns LZA president Ivars Kalviņš and the academy's secretary general, Baiba Rivža.

VID confirmed this to the news agency LETA. Declarations by state officials list income, property and other details, so checking them allows the service to compare the information provided with other available data.

According to the headline of a media report, VID is interested in the academy leadership's activity in a company linked to Višvanats, who has received Latvian citizenship. The information available does not specify the nature of that link, which questions the check covers, or when it might be completed.
