A video shared with the news portal "Delfi" shows an eager Labrador retriever rushing to help its owner clean up the yard on Sunday morning after a powerful storm hit Latvia. The dog threw itself into the task with great enthusiasm, but ran into a challenge in the form of a fallen branch too large for it to easily drag away. The footage was shared by the dog's own owner.

Damage across the country

The video was filmed in the aftermath of the strongest summer storm to hit Latvia in 60 years, which struck over the weekend. The storm left hundreds of thousands of households without electricity, and much of the country experienced very heavy and even extreme rainfall.

As of 1 p.m. on Sunday, power outages were still affecting around 245,000 customers of the company "Sadales tīkls" across Latvia. Meanwhile, between Saturday noon and 11 a.m. Sunday, the emergency number 112 received 2,395 calls related to damage caused by strong winds — roughly 800 more than during a comparable five-day period in July and August 2024, when Latvia was hit by previous storms and heavy rain.
