A sheriff's deputy in Trinity County, Texas, had an unforgettable moment during a night patrol after approaching a deer lying motionless by the side of the road, believing the animal was dead.

The encounter was captured on the patrol car's dashcam, and the footage was shared on Facebook by Trinity County Sheriff Woody Wallace, who joked that nighttime hours can bring things that will "scare a person half to death."

What happened in the video

The footage shows the deputy slowly approaching the animal. But just as he gets within arm's reach, the doe suddenly comes to and springs upright. The startled officer lets out a loud yell and sprints back to his patrol vehicle.

Once the initial shock passed, the deputy laughed at himself over the incident, saying, "Okay, we're good!" The sheriff added jokingly that the "offender" chose to flee on four legs rather than accept a ticket, disappearing into the woods of East Texas.

Deer unharmed

According to the sheriff, the deer was not seriously hurt in the incident and safely continued on its way after the unexpected encounter with the officer. The amusing clip has quickly gone viral online, already surpassing 10 million views.
