Vidosic makes surprise exit from Brighton just before WSL season begins

Brighton Women's manager Dario Vidosic is departing the Women's Super League club just a week before the new campaign kicks off, citing a desire to pursue a fresh opportunity.

The Australian's exit is a considerable setback for Brighton, who reached the Women's FA Cup final for the first time in the club's history in May under his guidance. Vidosic joined from Melbourne City in 2024 on a three-year contract as the club aimed to close the gap on the WSL's leading teams.

In his debut season he steered Brighton to a fifth-place finish, their best-ever WSL result, and followed it up in 2025-26 with notable victories over Arsenal and Manchester City.

Vidosic thanked players, staff and supporters for their backing during his time at the club, describing the decision to leave as difficult but the right moment to begin a new chapter for himself and his family.

With a week left before the season opener, Brighton had been tipped as capable of challenging the WSL's established powers - Arsenal, Chelsea, Manchester City and Manchester United - for a top-four finish. Reports from Spain suggest Arturo Ruiz, who has recently left Real Sociedad, is being lined up as Vidosic's successor. Meanwhile, sources indicate Vidosic could move to the NWSL in the United States, with Angel City seen as the most likely destination.

Brighton open their WSL season at home against Arsenal on 6 September. The club has made notable progress in recent years, announcing plans in April for what would be Europe's first purpose-built women's football stadium, at a cost of around £80m, while also attracting players such as Fran Kirby and Lia Walti. The departure now forces a managerial transition at a time when the club had hoped to build on its momentum toward a top-four finish.
