Ieviņa Harmonica Tradition Revives in Vidzeme
One of Vidzeme's cultural heritage gems – the Ieviņa harmonica – is being revived after nearly disappearing 15 years ago, when only a few players remained and instruments were in disrepair.
The tradition of the Ieviņa harmonica, a distinctive part of Vidzeme's cultural identity and listed in the national cultural heritage, is experiencing a revival. Some fifteen years ago, this tradition nearly died out: only a handful of people could play the instrument, and the existing instruments were in poor technical condition. Today, efforts are underway to restore both the instruments and the playing tradition. Enthusiasts are working to repair old harmonicas and teach new players, ensuring that this unique musical custom does not disappear completely.
