Summer heat can make indoor spaces uncomfortable, but there are several effective and simple ways to reduce the impact without expensive solutions.

Keep the Sun Out

One of the most basic steps is to block direct sunlight. Curtains and blinds, especially thicker layers, act as thermal insulation, keeping the home cooler. Blackout blinds not only provide privacy but also create an air gap between the window and the room, reducing heat exchange—they help in both summer and winter. During the hottest hours, keep windows facing the sun covered. Houseplants on windowsills can partially block light. In the evening or early morning when temperatures are lower, ventilate the rooms thoroughly.

Choose Temperature-Regulating Materials

To improve sleep on hot nights, use bedding made from natural materials. Cotton, viscose, lyocell, and linen are breathable and absorb moisture, keeping you cool in summer and warm in winter. Additional cooling can be achieved with mattress and pillow covers made from temperature-regulating materials; some ergonomic pillows have a cooling side.

Take Care of Yourself and Pets

In heat, it's important to drink plenty of water—it replenishes lost fluids and naturally cools the body. Use cold drinks, add ice, and opt for light meals. Simple methods like placing a chilled towel on the skin or using frozen water bottles can provide quick relief. Don't forget your four-legged friends—they always need access to fresh water and a shady resting spot. Add ice cubes to their water bowl, offer frozen treats, use a wet towel or a cooling mat. Gentle spraying with cool water also helps.
