Wigan earn comfortable win over out-of-form Saints
Wigan Warriors secured their third successive derby victory against St Helens, winning 38-16 and adding to the visitors' woes after their head coach departure earlier in the week.
Wigan Warriors recorded a dominant 38-16 win over St Helens in the Betfred Super League, marking their third consecutive derby triumph. The match came days after St Helens parted ways with head coach Paul Rowley, who left the club on Thursday following less than a year in charge. Eamon O'Carroll took over as interim head coach.
The visitors started strongly, with Jack Welsby opening the scoring in the fifth minute after Wigan's Harry Smith slipped in defence. However, Wigan responded quickly as Bevan French crossed over. St Helens regained the lead through Jacob Douglas, but the hosts took control with two tries from Zach Eckersley and two from Oliver Partington, along with Adam Keighran's score. Lewis Murphy pulled one back for Saints with an acrobatic finish.
Wigan's victory moved them level on points with league leaders Leeds Rhinos at 30, but Wakefield's big win dropped the Warriors to third place. St Helens have now lost seven of their last 11 matches across all competitions.
A controversial moment saw Harry Robertson's try disallowed after video review, despite the on-field referee awarding it. After halftime, Jackson Hastings was sin-binned for pulling back Bevan French. Wigan head coach Matt Peet said he was pleased with the two points but admitted his side was loose at times. St Helens interim boss Eamon O'Carroll expressed pride in his team's effort and intent, stating they can build on that performance.
