Viļāni residents hold joint clean-up to fight Spanish slugs
More than 20 residents of Viļāni in Rēzekne municipality took part in the town's first joint effort to collect invasive Spanish slugs, which are spreading rapidly and damaging local gardens.

The town of Viļāni in Rēzekne municipality has held its first organized community effort to collect Spanish slugs, an invasive pest causing growing concern among local gardeners. More than 20 residents took part in the initiative.
Many participants said they had already been fighting the slugs individually in their own yards, but noted that the problem is not easing — instead, the pest continues to spread quickly. Residents describe the situation as serious, with the slugs causing considerable damage.
In recent years, Spanish slugs have become an increasing problem for gardeners across Latvia, threatening various plants and vegetables. Owners of small garden plots in Viļāni say the damage from the pest has been noticeable this season.
The joint clean-up effort aimed to curb the spread of the pest by combining the efforts of multiple households and garden owners at once. Organizers and participants believe this collective approach is more effective than individual efforts, since the slugs move freely between neighboring properties, making isolated action less effective on its own.
