Vilis Lācītis releases book about Ūdris and the rock music era
Writer Vilis Lācītis presented his new book "Life, Drugs and Rock 'n' Roll," which tells the story of musician Rolands Ūdris and Lācītis's own adventures in music and life before he moved abroad.

Writer Vilis Lācītis, best known for his novel "Stroika," has published a new book titled "Life, Drugs and Rock 'n' Roll" (publisher "Dienas Grāmata"). This work is a chronological prequel to his first book, describing the period before Lācītis left for abroad when he was actively involved in music and spirituality.
The book launch took place at a concert in "Vinilbārs," featuring performances by several bands, including “Pupociku vasara” and former members of “The Hobos.” A highlight was Rolands Ūdris's daughter, Madlēna, who sang the song “It’s Cold in Beijing,” which once won the Best Pop Song of the Year award. Lācītis recalled that during the concert it started raining, and Ūdris sat outside the umbrella.
Music journalist Uldis Rudaks wrote in the book's introduction that it provides the most comprehensive overview of the band “The Hobos” and its leader's activities. Lācītis himself has defined his music as “butter rock,” where the main goal is to have a good time rather than technical skill.
In an interview, Lācītis also revealed his educational journey, which led him to the University of Oxford, where he earned a master's degree in social anthropology. He later worked as a teacher in England before moving to Canada after Brexit. There, he now works as a therapist and is studying psychedelic therapy. The book also weaves in reflections on psychonautics and memories of his youth.
Lācītis also noted that Brexit was an emotional decision that affected many Latvians. According to research, approximately 150,000 Latvians live in the UK, making it the largest diaspora community. He emphasized that while immigration benefits business owners, unskilled workers may face difficulties due to competition from newcomers.
