Ilona Vilkoite, head of the Vēdera Clinic and a gastroenterologist-endoscopist, explained in the TV24 show “Ārsts atbild” why it is important to detect serious digestive tract diseases as early as possible. She noted that severe illnesses like cancer often have no pronounced symptoms in the early stages, so patients must pay attention to their health and consult a doctor at the first possible signs.

She stressed that modern medicine not only enables early diagnosis but can also prevent disease development in some cases. As an example, she mentioned the possibility of treating Helicobacter pylori infection, thereby reducing the risk of stomach cancer. She also explained that during colonoscopy, small polyps in the intestines can be found and removed before they become malignant.

Vilkoite urged people not to postpone health examinations and to consult doctors in a timely manner. She emphasized that early diagnosis is often decisive in preventing serious diseases or starting treatment at the most favorable stage.
