A large tent collapsed during a church's 20th anniversary celebration in Moneta, Virginia, on Friday evening, resulting in one fatality and 22 injuries, according to local authorities. The incident occurred as EastLake Community Church held an outdoor service amid heavy rain, lightning and strong winds. Bedford County spokesperson Shelley Basinger said the group was in the process of leaving the event tent when it collapsed. Acting Fire and Rescue Chief Abbey Johnston described the scene as "very chaotic" as first responders worked to account for everyone and move them to safety. Eleven individuals were transported to hospitals, while 11 others sustained minor injuries and were treated at the scene. Pastor Troy Keaton stated that he had just stepped onto the stage to instruct the congregation to go to their cars when a gust of wind lifted the tent. In a social media statement, he expressed grief over the loss of a member of the church. The tent, which had seating for 1,500 people, had passed a county building inspection three days prior. Officials are investigating the collapse and collecting evidence. No further details were provided about the conditions of those hospitalized. Virginia Governor Abigail Spanberger said her team was in contact with responders and pledged continued support for the community.
