Latvian league: Tukums hosts bottom side Ogre United in survival battle
In round 28 of the Latvian Virsliga, second-to-last Tukums 2000 hosts bottom-placed Ogre United, while Jelgava faces Super Nova in another key clash.
Two significant matches in the fight for league position take place on Friday, September 5, in the Latvian football Virsliga. At 15:00, second-to-last placed Tukums 2000 will host bottom-of-the-table Ogre United at Tukums city stadium. Tukums currently lead their rival by six points, but Ogre United have a game in hand, meaning an away win would make the season's final stretch considerably tenser.
The two sides have split results fairly evenly this season: a 1:1 draw in Ogre in March, a 6:1 win for Tukums in May, and a 3:2 comeback win for Ogre United on home soil in June, decided by a stoppage-time penalty converted by Kristers Čudars. Čudars, who has scored three of his eight season goals against Tukums, will miss this match after being sent off in the previous game against RFS. Ogre United have collected just one point in their last five matches, while Tukums 2000 have managed three points in the same span, including a 2:1 win over a Europa-League-fatigued Liepāja in early August.
Jelgava host Super Nova
Two hours later, at 17:00, Jelgava will host Super Nova at the Zemgale Olympic Centre, holding a two-point advantage over their opponents, who in turn have two games in hand. Jelgava have dominated this season's head-to-head meetings, collecting seven of nine possible points, including a 5:1 away win in June.
Jelgava's top scorer is Czech forward Filip Hašek with six goals, while Super Nova's leading scorer Valerijs Lizunovs has netted nine times. Both were on target in the previous round — Lizunovs earned a point away to Auda, while Hašek scored and provided an assist in Jelgava's win over Tukums.
