Commander of Viru Infantry Battalion responds to Chancellor of Justice: conscripts have enough food
A spring inspection revealed that conscripts arriving late to meals sometimes face limited choice, but the battalion commander assures that food quantities are sufficient and a rotation system has been implemented.
During a spring inspection of conscript service conditions at the Viru Infantry Battalion in Jõhvi, advisors to the Chancellor of Justice found that conscripts who arrive at the mess hall toward the end of meal times do not always have enough food. In a letter to the battalion commander, Chancellor of Justice Ülle Madise noted that while conscripts were generally satisfied with the food provided, there were situations where those arriving late could not get enough to eat.
Battalion commander Lt. Col. Margus Mikk explained in his response that conscripts are offered several dishes, and it can happen that units arriving first prefer one specific dish, leaving latecomers unable to choose from all options. However, Mikk stated that during regular checks, no cases were identified where conscripts lacked food or went hungry.
He added that the battalion now rotates meal times every two weeks: units that previously ate last get the opportunity to arrive first in the next period.
