At least 11 killed in suicide bomb attack in northwestern Pakistan

At least 11 people were killed and roughly 30 others injured on Saturday when a suicide bomber struck a police checkpoint in northwestern Pakistan, according to police and rescue officials.
Bilal Faizi, a spokesperson for the provincial emergency service, said the bomber detonated a vehicle packed with explosives at the checkpoint in Dera Ismail Khan district, located in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province.
The Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), also known as the Pakistani Taliban, has claimed responsibility for the attack.
A pattern of rising militant violence
Pakistan has experienced a growing number of militant attacks in recent years, with the TTP claiming responsibility for many of them. The Counter Extremism Project (CEP) describes the TTP as a conglomerate of around 40 tribal and non-tribal militant groups whose main target is the Pakistani state.
Founded in late 2007, the TTP is allied with the Afghan Taliban, which regained power in Kabul in 2021 after ousting the US-backed government.
According to the CEP, TTP fighters regularly target security forces, civilians and political figures in both Pakistan and Afghanistan.
