Latvian Volleyball Federation and Anastasija Samoilova agree to continue dialogue after public dispute
The Latvian Volleyball Federation and its top beach volleyball players have agreed, after a meeting initiated by the Olympic Committee, to resolve recent public disagreements through further talks, with a follow-up discussion on youth system funding planned for late September.
A meeting initiated by the Latvian Olympic Committee (LOK) took place at its offices between the Latvian Volleyball Federation (LVF) and the country's leading beach volleyball players, aimed at resolving disagreements that had recently surfaced publicly. The talks included LOK leadership, athletes Anastasija Samoilova, Tīna Graudiņa and Mārtiņš Pļaviņš, as well as representatives of the LVF, the Latvian Olympic Unit and the LOK Athletes' Commission.
Both sides acknowledged during the meeting that the conflict stemmed from a lack of communication, and the earlier sharp public statements were attributed to heightened emotions rather than any deliberate threats or attempts to restrict the other side's actions.
Agreement on future cooperation
Participants agreed to maintain a more regular and deeper dialogue between athletes and sports administrators going forward. It was confirmed that the leading beach volleyball players will continue their preparations and fight for qualification for the Los Angeles Olympics without hindrance, receiving all necessary support.
Youth system identified as the core issue
The meeting's main outcome was identified as a clear definition of the central problem — the need to strengthen the youth system and increase support for it. All involved parties plan to sit down again at the end of September to discuss this issue in more depth and potentially work out a concrete action plan.
During the talks it was emphasized that the current disagreements stem from a long-standing, systemic problem with state funding for sport. State funding has not increased since 2016, while attracting private-sector funding remains difficult. Youth national teams suffer the most from this, since the transition from junior to adult level requires additional resources. The situation highlights the relevance of the Sports Fund and its financial support.
