Volkswagen Group may be considering a gradual phase-out of its Seat brand by the end of 2029, according to information obtained by German business magazine WirtschaftsWoche. Under the reported plan, the newer and more sportily positioned Cupra brand would take on an increasingly prominent role within the group.

Reasons behind the possible move

The differing sales performance of the two brands is cited as a key factor. In 2025, Cupra sold 328,800 vehicles, up 32.5% year-on-year, while Seat's sales fell 17% to 257,400 units. Cupra maintained its lead in sales during the first half of 2026 as well.

The brands also differ sharply in their approach to electrification. Cupra already offers several fully electric models, including the Born, Tavascan and Raval, while Seat's lineup is still dominated by combustion-engine models such as the Ibiza, Arona and Leon.

How the transition could unfold

Under the reported scenario, Seat's production and sales structures would be gradually shifted toward Cupra, with existing Seat models being streamlined. Current Seat owners would still retain access to servicing and other brand-related commitments.

A possible wind-down of Seat is described as part of a broader restructuring within the Volkswagen Group aimed at cutting costs and simplifying its model and production structure. Cupra would be preserved through this process and would likely emerge as an even more significant brand for the group.

The plan would still need to be approved by Volkswagen's supervisory board, and the company has not yet officially confirmed the information.
