Volkswagen to unveil electric ID. Tiguan in October, replacing both ID.4 and ID.5
Volkswagen will hold the official premiere of its new electric ID. Tiguan next month, with the model reaching the market in early 2027 to succeed both the ID.4 and ID.5. The launch reflects a new naming strategy that gives electric models familiar traditional nameplates.
Volkswagen has announced that its new electric SUV, the ID. Tiguan, will have its official premiere already in October. The model succeeds the current ID.4, but instead of keeping a numbered ID designation, the company has chosen to give it the well-known Tiguan name.
A new naming approach
The move is part of a broader Volkswagen strategy to link electric models more closely with the brand's traditional, widely recognized names. Tiguan is one of the automaker's most recognizable nameplates, with more than 8.3 million units sold worldwide, and the company hopes this legacy will help boost recognition for the new electric vehicle.
Design and technology
Visually, the ID. Tiguan will move closer to the current combustion-engine Tiguan while retaining an electric-vehicle silhouette, featuring a more angular design, a new front light bar and a redesigned rear end. Underneath, it will use the upgraded MEB+ platform along with a new entry-level motor. Base versions are expected to feature LFP battery cells.
On the market from 2027
The model is set to reach the market in early 2027 and will take over not only from the ID.4 but also from the ID.5, which will not receive a direct successor. Volkswagen notes that the electric and conventional Tiguan will continue to exist side by side, giving buyers a choice between the fully electric ID. Tiguan and versions with combustion or hybrid powertrains.
Production of the new electric model will take place at the Emden plant in Germany, meaning ID.4 production at the Zwickau plant will come to an end.
